Located in Howrah, Tasmania, this cherished family home sits on a gently sloped site with panoramic views across the Derwent River and towards Mt Nelson. Hosting Christmas gatherings each year, the owners sought a renovation that would honour the home’s long-held memories while maximising its generous deck off the kitchen, an essential space for summer entertaining, yet still feel intimate and cocooning during the cooler Tasmanian winters. A timeless, enduring palette was selected to ensure the design remains grounded for years to come, allowing the shifting light and expansive outlook to remain at the forefront.
Originally a modest brick dwelling, the renovation reinterprets the existing form with a softened, cohesive language, retaining the building’s structure while introducing painted brickwork, refined tonal variations and gentle curvature throughout. Inside, our reconfiguration of the kitchen and dining spaces creates a more expansive and connected relationship to the river, opening the interior to uninterrupted views while enhancing the home’s day-to-day functionality.
Inside, a quiet materiality and gentle curvature define the spatial flow. The kitchen’s contoured island, vertically stacked tilework and honed marble surfaces bring a tactile rhythm, complemented by the warmth of timber flooring and the subtle lustre of bronze detailing. Each element is considered to balance tone and texture, offering both visual clarity and depth.
Throughout, the interiors are composed with a sense of stillness, an expression of simplicity and restraint that feels inherently calm and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.
