Portsea Residence, a reimagined 1970s home in the coveted coastal enclave of Portsea. Conceived as a sanctuary for both entertaining and slow living, the residence balances architectural preservation with transformative contemporary design. Working entirely within the original footprint on a steep and challenging site, the internal layout was reconfigured to create clear active and rest zones, enhance light and landscape connections, and elevate comfort without expansion.

Original timber ceilings, cedar beams, and expansive glazing were retained and celebrated, now sitting in dialogue with a reversed material palette across levels. Custom staining of existing beams further unify architecture and interiors, while walnut-toned timbers, warm marble, limestone flooring, and bronze fixtures & hardware were selected not only for beauty but for their longevity in the coastal climate. Every surface, junction, and finish was approached with intent.

The reimagined plan introduces clarity and flexibility, with two sleeping wings, dual living areas, and improved circulation, including an external stair linking the upper level with the pool and sundeck. Interiors shift between moods: a cocoon-like retreat upstairs contrasts with a dramatic double-height living zone below, anchoring the home’s social heart. A floating kitchen joinery detail echoes exposed ceiling beams, tying architectural rhythm to interior expression. Every decision supports a refined, highly functional residence that adapts gracefully to shifting seasons, gatherings, and daily rituals.
